Obama Opt-Out

You know that tradition of the president inviting championship teams to the White House for an honoring ceremony? It should be ended. Except for Olympians and probably World Cup players. Those who are playing for their country and are genuinely honored to be invited, politics notwithstanding.

This week’s White House debacle over honoring the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins is the most recent example of why this practice needs to be limited to national teams. The Bruins have two Americans on the team. One of them, goalie Tim Thomas, was an intentional no-show. He’s a Tea Party zealot and a contributor to the right-wing FreedomWorks.

It was his right, of course, to snub the president. He has the right to be unconscionably wrong. Now the White House has another reason to severely limit this tradition of honoring millionaire athletes.
