Florida

* According to a research report by Apartment List, a rental listing company, the Sunshine State leads the nation in housing unaffordability, with 56.5 percent of renters spending 30 percent or more of their income on housing.

* Stop the Spiel: The Villages are back in the news, but not for hosting a Trump rally or a DeFOXtis press conference. This time, ironically, it’s because three of the Trumpster Villagers have been arrested over allegations of casting more than one vote in the 2020 presidential election. Actually, two are registered GOPsters and the other is an NPA with pro-Trump Facebook posts. They face felony charges and up to five years in prison—with no presidential pardon looming.

* DeSantis used his “news conference” forum in Sumter County as a pulpit for further excoriating “critical race theory.” “We won’t allow Florida tax dollars to be spent teaching kids to hate our country or to hate each other,” declared the nuance-challenged DeSantis. His whitewashing-of- history message was further underscored by a lectern sign: “Stop Woke Act.”

* JoLa update. Just what the University of Florida didn’t need: Indications that the granting of tenure to the state’s controversial new surgeon general, Joseph Ladapo, might have a been a political rush to flawed judgment. Then, again, maybe having promoted COVID treatments such as hydroxychloroquine, isn’t that big a deal to those who appointed him.

* “How we respond to this (academic freedom) challenge will define our university for years to come.”–University of Florida Faculty Senate Chairman David Bloom.
